What is bone marrow ?
It is a soft spongy tissue inside our bones like thigh, hip etc. It is found in the centre of the bone. The stem cells which can produce blood cells which carry oxygen through out the body is found here. Our body cant produce white blood cells with out a bone marrow, which is required to fight infection, the platelets we need to stop bleeding. In some cases, the best treatment is a transplantation of bone marrow donated by a donor (another person)

How Bone marrow is collected before transplant ?
A week or 2 weeks before the harvest of bone marrow is being done, one to two units blood will be withdrawn from the donor , patient (for an allogeneic transplantation). Which is actually taken to give back during the harvest of bone marrow. General anaesthesia is given during harvest, so that the person will feel nothing. It actually involve the removal of few marrow from the bone at the front and back of the hip bone (pelvis). The donor or patient have to stay at the hospital overnight so as to recover fully from the general anaesthesia.
